developing mathematicians of the future
Maths enables pupils to develop independence, confidence and aspirational learners who are able to see and make connections between the different mathematical concepts and the wider world enabled through deep learning and challenges for all groups of pupils. Children will be able to confidently solve problems, reason mathematically and successfully perform investigations across the curriculum.
In order for the children to reach their mathematical potential, we deliver an aspirational and inspiring curriculum, teaching fluency of number facts and recall alongside teaching children how to solve increasingly challenging mathematical problems and develop their reasoning skills. Our children are immersed in number rich environments, underpinned by rich mathematical vocabulary and opportunities to talk.
Teachers use the White Rose Maths Schemes of Learning as the basis of their planning whilst using their professional judgement to adapt these to meet the needs of their class. The expectation is that the majority of pupils will move through the programmes of study at broadly the same pace. However, decisions about when to progress should always be based on the security of pupils’ understanding and their readiness to progress to the next stage. Pupils who grasp concepts rapidly will be challenged through being offered rich and sophisticated problems Those who are not sufficiently fluent with earlier material will consolidate their understanding, including through additional practice, before moving on.

Mastering number
In order to develop our children's fluency in their understanding and recall of number facts, we implement the 'Mastering Number' initiative in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2.
